How many miles? Maybe it's time for a transmission fluid change.

Scan vehicle for codes, remove battery negative terminal for a few minutes perhaps TCM got stupid. If aren't any codes I would change ATF, replace filter and flush system.

Curious... The MAZDA does not have a re-learn procedure and the ECU controls the TCM on that model MAZDA ,so disconnecting the battery does not reset any adaptives in the ECU on that year MAZDA? I might also point out that the average diagnostic scanners unless they indicate TCM read capable you can't get the TCM trouble codes only the ECU DTCs unless there is those few that are also ECU directly related.

While the disconnecting of the battery may have appeared to correct the OPs issue, I am more incline that it was only coincidence, and the original problem was not resolved?

I would also be VERY careful if or when considering "FLUSHING" a automatic transmission and if it does need to be done have the service done from a shop that has the specialized Transmission service equipment to do it. I do recommend at least filter and pan fluid change if anything you can have a look at the pan, drain plug magnet and the anything else unusual. .

Most Mazda TCM's do have a relearn/initialization function.
