I can't, for the life of me, figure out how to watch movies on my system. Is there a way to mirror my phone screen or play movies? Seems like a waste of a decent screen if I couldn't..

Not sure we can do this. though I agree with you - the screen size would be great for it. I exclusively use Android Auto and I know the option to do so is disabled as a safety measure.

For example, I have VLC (app) on my phone which plays audio/video just fine by itself but when plugged in, only audio works. There are however some apps+hacks you can find online (Youtube) that bypass the system and allow you to watch videos - haven't tried any yet.

I was able to run youtube, but you need to get used to it, since the touchscreen is disabled with AA.
And I like this solution since it is just an app to manage on your phone and your not modding or hacking anything in your car system.

 

The idea makes sense. But I would agree with Mazda as that is a HUGE safety issue causing the driver to take their eyes off the road. This is why all the cars have all these monitors now. Because people don't even want to pay attention while driving. How concerning
