Default 1997 mazda millenia grinning nosie?

I just recently bought this car. The car only has one problem. When I start it and while it is in park, it makes a grinning noise. Sort of like when you try to start a car that is already started. Or metal on metal grinning. Some times when it starts it will not make this sound but a belt grinning sound. But will go away when in drive. When the car is in drive it will not make that sound. Sometimes the car will start while it is on the on position. I think it might be the ignition switch, but I am not 100% sure.

Thanks, JB

Alright maybe someone could help me out with this. I replaced the started and it still makes the grinding noise. But I noticed something. When its making the grinding noise I can turn the key in between the start position and the on position and it will stop making the sound. I also noticed that when the car is started and not making the grinding sound I can turn the key to the start position and it not make the customary grinding sound when doing so, but the console lights will go off and come back on when I put the key back to the on position.

Any help would be grateful. Thanks

Sounds like your ignition itself might be bad. Perhaps is not fully rotating-back after you turn to 'start' and then release the key....

Karlt10 means the ignition lock. I think he is right. You will probably need to replace it. But first try electronic cleaner in a can or WD 40.

No, I don't mean the ignition 'lock'. As I clearly stated- it could be the ignition. Couldn't care less if it's locking. At this point it sounds like it's sticking.

Yes, I confused "lock" and "switch".
