Default Fuel odor from vapor canister?

My 2000 2.5 Millenia has a fuel odor after filling the tan, I suspect perhaps the vapor canister is not doing it's job. I have at times topped off the tank. But since a new one is 200+, I was wondering if anyone has any ideas as far asa testing or cleaning the canister. Or maybe a good place to buy parts.

Overfilling the tank is what usually cuases this situation. Perhaps if you stop filling at the first click of the nozzle in time the canister will/should clear itself.
These are usually designed to be good for the life of the vehicle... unless there is another problem. e.g. a bad (cracked/split/leaking) or kinked hose in the system, or a kinked/blocked vent hose from the filler neck?
The car is 11yrs old now, perhaps its time to put it up on a lift and inspect the system for damage?

Probably was overfilling, but did check the canister and there is no obvious damage.
