Default Interference or not - ?

Hello everyone...i am new here, just bought a 2000 Milly 2.5L (140k miles). Tranny fluid was a bit dark - got it changed and hope it does not crap the bed. The Dealership wants bout 800+ to do the timing belt and water pump. Idependent shop says 1300.00 to do the same job.. and told me not to wait to long because i could tear up the motor if it goes bad. So...
from what i understand - this motor is a NON- INterference motor right? That independent shop said the opposite.. i think they are wrong but you guys know better than me.. what say you...

I really don't want them to do it .. i was just getting quotes from different shops. It was just surprising to see a shop that gets A+ reviews do give me some bogus info. I would do it myself but lack the tools and direction.
