Default mazda mx-3 distributor problem

hi my daughter bought a mazda mx-3 a little while ago, and it has now faild to start, she whent out one morning and it just would not fire, i took a look at the spark on the plugs and there was not one, looked into the distributor and found that the rotor arm conntact pin was broken and also the distributor cap centre pin was broken.

today i have replaced both units with new ones but still have no spark to the plugs, cannot find the location of the coil to see if it is supplying the voltage.

has anyone got any ideas as to what to do next.

do you have to re-set the ecu or anything like that, i have never had one of these cars to deal with before so dont know much about them.

by the way the car was running fine before parking it on the drive and going to it the next morning and it failing to start.

hope someone can help
regards kevin

My son is having the exact same problem. Right now we are at a loss as to what is going on with it. If there is someone who has an idea please let us know.

Don't know about the 4cyl, but on the V6 the coil is IN the distributor unit, it's all in one as opposed to a seperate unit.

The 92/93 4-cyl has an external coil, mounted close to the battery. It's easy to find, with a wire going to the distributer in the classic setup. 94+ 4-cyl has the internal coil like that on the V6.
I wonder if, when the cap and rotor parts broke, it may have shorted the internal coil? Just a guess.

The disty for the v6 (dont know about the 4cyl) are probably the weakest link on these cars. I have swaped once, but now I have bougth an external coil and ingnition modul for the next time it breaks.
