Would have to read the trouble code to be sure, but if you also notice some erratic or low Idle (looks like misfiring also), I would suspect your EGR valve might need a cleaning or replacement. I cleaned mine a couple weeks ago because I also had some troubles with idle mainly on low fuel or low grade fuel. I was reading a random misfiring trouble code and found a post on this forum about the EGR valve. It seems to be a common problem with the protege5.
That said,my first step would be to etheir buy an OBDII reader (basic models start at around 80$) or get a mechanics to read you the code.
