93 Protege - Mass flow sensor

93 Protege - Mass flow sensor
Hello everyone,
My question is, if I wish to get rid of my existing air filter box and ducting and convert to a cold air or short ram intake, how do I intall a new mass flow sensor?
The existing mass flow sensor on a 93 Protege is an integral part of the air filter box lid. Air is drawn air up through the filter, turns 90 deg and the enters the MFS. I can't see how this can be used in a cold air intake arrangement.
Is there an aftermarket MFS that can be used? I see Cold air intake systems on the market, but none seem to address this issue.
If anyone has some experience on a first generation Protege please let me know what you think!

Thanks for responding!
Yes, the intake duct to the engine has a c-clamp that attaches it to the downstream side of the MFS though a weird square plastic housing the size of a piece of pie. I don't have a problem with that side of the MFS. I see that the MFS is bolted (4 bolts) to a 90 deg square elbow down into the air filter box.
If I were to unbolt the elbow and remove the air filter box, I would be left with the intake duct and the MFS. The intake side of the MFS would be a square hole.
The problem being; should I use the existing MFS with its sqaure hole as part of a new cold air intake system, or is there an aftermarket MFS that is more cylindrical in shape that would adapt more readily?

that is honestly the weirdest set up i have ever seen i don't exactly know how an aftermarket intake would work with a square hole but if i was to go to a diffrent mfs use the 99-01 mfs i have that one and its round it might work out better im not sure how the car will react to the mfs or if the wireing harness is diffrent i went to aempower.com and they didn't make an intake for the protege till 1999 so honestly your best bet is to change the mass flow air sensor or even if you want just take the air filter box off and put a cone filter on the end of your stock tubing cause really thats whats going to make a diffrence taking the corners out of the air intake system so its nice an smooth.

you know i was looking around last night at intakes for your car and i found one from top gear autosports and on there intake it looks like it comes with a bracket thats square but has a round flange welded to it so like an adapter for your mfs so i guess there are 2 options really get that adapter or get a new mfs
