93 protege stalls at stops

Liz, in all honesty, it could be a number of things w/a car that old.
If you used std carb cleaner you may have done more harm than good.Even the pressure caused by a spray cancan ruin perfectly good sensors. The electronics on more modern cars ('90's on) don't like that stuff very much.
I'm guessing EGR valve (bad diaphragm and/or clogged passageway,) PCV valve, throttle position sensor, or MAF sensor, if the car has one, but in 15 yrs.... who knows? 'Know any professionals you might get advise or some testing from.

i don't think that the 93 had an egr valve. i think that those didn't come along until obd2 came into play. that model should just have a smog pump and may not even have that (not 100% sure).

I started seeing EGR's in the NE in 1974, when MG changed from two carbs to one, raised the car body to federalbumper stds and reduced the power in an already underpowered roadster.
After searching around the web, you may be right about this engine not having an EGR, but many still did including other Mazda's. Even the 2003 P5's have a parts listing.
