Default 93 Protege transaxle let go. What fits?

Hi guys. My mom's 93 Prot just lost it's tranny yesterday. 5 speed manual. The car only has 68,000 miles, so it would be nuts not tofix it.

Question is what are my transaxle options? What years fit when I start to scavenge yards or look for parts cars? I was thinking at least 91 to 94, but not sure.

Thanks for any help you can offer!!

i'm showing that it should fit 90-95 protege and 323 with similar motors. sounds like you will be doing the work yourself. i would pull the tranny and check out the bolt pattern and just make sure the bolt patternis the same for yours and the replacement. i'm not 100% on how relevant it will be, but on tranny swaps in the past, i have had to look at the motor and see where the dipstick and other little things like that were. i was always into old chevys before i started tuning though so i don't know if that would be relevant here, but there it is anyways.

Thanks for the response on that. I was pretty sure about up to 94, but wasn't sure about 95 since it seems like the body changes then. Yards are giving me a quote of $500 to $550 on the tranny witha 30 day guarantee.Hate to drop that in a car this old, but it's one of those old lady cars that's spotless inside and low miles at that. Plan to do it myself, so I'll for sure check out as much as I can on the salvaged part before the install. The only aggravating part is all my jackstands are holding up my disassembled 74 VW beetle for brake overhaul [:@]

i used to be a beetle guy. still regret selling them. they were a lot of work and hard to find parts for but man they were a lot of fun. i had a 68 that had a superbeetle power plant and a 69 that was all off road. it had the full one piece baja front end and a lift but my cousin tried to do a notch back conversion on it that looked stupid. it would have looked really good if he had done it right. i miss them though.

Hey, parts for air cooled VW's are no problem at all. You can get almost everything you can think of via used and aftermarket reproduction. And pretty cheap. There are tons of dealers in CA and FL with online shops that are very good. Check thesamba.com for the biggest web site for VW's including forums and massive classified section. It's enormous.
I have a '02 Mazda Protege to actually get me around, but keep my VW for goofing around.

this has been about 5-6 years now and i had limited access to a lot of stuff then. all that i really had access to then was swap meets, mags, and the local euro shop. now i'm sure it would be a lot easier for me to find parts. been getting the itch to get another one so i might start looking for another project soon, now that i'm a little older and have a little more to work with.
