98' Protege CEL problem
I have had this problem with the CEL coming on for about 2 weeks now. The CEL is not always on, but comes on only after I've driven for about 5-6 miles. The error code that I got is P0505 (Idling sytem malfunction). Recently, my car broke down while I was driving (the engine actually stopped as i was driving and wouldn't start again for a couple of hours). I had the battery, alternator and cooling system checked out and they seemed to be working fine. Is it possible that the idling system malfunction can cause such a breakdown?

It could cause this kind of breakdown if your Idle Air Control valve is sticking closed. How is your engineidle speed, high, low, normal?? A leak in the intake air system can also set this code. For this you want to check for any vaccum leaks and also check the air intake boot between the air cleaner housing and engine for tears or openings. Somewhat common for this boot to tear in the accordian looking section so pay close attention to that area,

Thanks for your reply!
My idling rpm is about 950-1000 (without a/c). I am not sure if this is withinthe normal range. What could be possible reasons for the Idling Air Control valve to get stuck in the closed position? If it is due to some deposits, then can itbe cleaned easily?

RE: 98' Protege CEL problem
IACs stick when they are gunked up with grease or oil and it isn't uncommon to have one stick at all. that idle sounds a little high to me. mine stays around 750-850 with no load on the engine. i would try cleaning the IAC first, because it is the easiest, cheapest, and most likely cause. i clean mine with solvents and a tooth brush.
