Default AC Problem

2001 Mazda Protégé 2.0 LX model.

When I turn on the AC I can hear the compressor working. When the fan speed is 1, 2, or 3 the AC button is green, the compressor is working but no air is coming out of the vent.

When I turn the fan speed **** to 4 the AC button light goes out and I have air flow from the vent. The hose from the compressor is cold to the touch but the air coming out of the vent on 4 is not cold.

Does it make a difference which direction you send the air, defrost, body or feet? the dial on the right:

some cars have trouble with the blend door. I don't know if this is the correct year. This is taken from the Autozone repair guides http://www.autozone.com/autozone/rep...96b43f8037cdb3 :

maybe one of the wires is disconnected or damaged.

I hope this takes you in the right direction.

Check if the wires are in the proper places and properly adjusted.

If you're referring to the temp **** it operates OK. The problem seems to be isolated to the speed control unit.

I have the temp control **** turned to coldest setting (Knobb of the left). I have the air direction **** turned to upper vent outlet (**** on the right).

When I turn the middle **** (AC on; fan speed) to 1, 2 or 3 setting the AC light shows green, I can sense the compressor is on and the hose is cold but no air flow.

When I turn the same **** to #4 position the AC light turns off and there is air flow but not cold air.

This is my best attempt to explain my problem and I do appreciate your help.

Do you have any air flow at all in any position through the windshield defrost?

I have air on all settings including windshield only on speed 4.

Sometimes, on 4, the green light on the ac button turns on and I have cold air. Other times the light does not come on and I don't have cold air.

This applies to speed 4 only.

Still no air from speed 1,2, or 3 in any of the vent settings.

Don"t know what the fan setting has to do with it, but intermittent a/c on/off I suspect low freon, and the low cutoff switch is controlling the compressor on/off as it should. I'd advise having the freon checked. Is this the original compressor?
