Fuel Pump Relay Location 99 Mazda Protege 1.8
I hope you all are doing well!
I have a 1999 Mazda Protege 1.8 4DR, the motor turns but doesn't start, the coils and the fuel pump have no current.
The fuses on the panel and engine compartment do not show any for fuel pump, but we check the fuses and these are good, none are damaged.
I was told to look for the Fuel Pump rely and reset it. I have looked on the Internet and I have not been able to find any help on location for the fuel pump rely.
Could someone please help in pointing me to where the fuel pump is located.

The issue is the ECM
Hi Wapwapwap the relay was ok. The mechanic told me the ECM is bad. He placed the scanner and it did not recognize the connection. I took it to an electronic mechanic he also told me that the ECM is bad.
I was looking on eBay for a replacement and even though they look the same the part numbers vary and I am stuck not knowing which to buy.
My ECM is XU3F-12A650-GG
And the other ECMs on eBay that are for a Mazda Protege and lower cost are:
XU3F-12A650-DG
XU3F-12A650-VC
XU3F-12A650-ME
Would you know if there would be any difference?
I am trying to look for one that accepts returns.

Dont trust your mechanic. The fact that he didnt know where the fuel pump relay is should be a warning sign for you.
Your car may not be OBD2 compliant so wont hook up to his scan tool unless he has the correctly configured adapter.
Regardless ECU is cheap to buy from a auto wrecker. My local wrecker sells them for 250 for the 1.6. Wreckers need your money so go see them and share the love.
What i would be more concerned about was how your ecu died? Did you jump start someones car, is there a short somewhere? I havent owned any cars where ECU died on its own.
If you unplug the electric connection to your coil and connect a multi meter to that plug have you confirmed for yourself that there is no voltage reading when you try to start the car?

The long story short.
I had filled my gas tank and my fuel gauge was only showing 1/4 tank full. I took it to the mechanic to get it fixed. Two days go by and I visit the mechanic and he tells me the car wont start. At this time I am baffled. The mechanic told me that the car just turned off. He verified the relay and fuses and they were OK.
So I had a electric mechanic visit were the car was park, and pulled the spark car cable and had me crank the car and told me there were no spark. He connected the scanner and got a message something about no connection detected. He then removed the ECM and told me it was very hot to the touch and open it and showed me where there black burn marks. He told me that someone must had caused a short since the car was running. The electric mechanic also re-verified the fuses, relays and said that everything else is OK. That once I get the replacement ECM and connect it it should start.
None of my local wreckers had any parts for my 1999 Mazda Model. So I ended looking on ebay and found one with the same number XU3F-12A650-GG.
Hopefully I can get my car running again.

Most of them are knuckle draggers. The next time you have issues with your car your first step should always be to jump online or jump into these forums youll get way better advice. Think of it like this. The general technician is like a handyman. They have general knowledge of how cars work. The more knowledgeable technicians if you drive a Mazda will always be the technicians for Mazda since they live and breathe Mazdas. So if you arent taking your car to a dealer, you have to deal with technicians that dont earn much money so to save and make money they let their apprentice do all the work so you end up paying premium hourly rates for second class technicians.
Im fortunate we have a lot of wreckers here that specialise in each brand. The protege was one car wreckers in the know wanted to grab as many as they could of because there was a big scandal in australia where they were smuggling drugs in new proteges. Like hiding them behind the timing belt cover and other odd areas of the car. Basically the drug dealers got the VIN numbers mixed up so when they got caught authorities had no idea which cars had drugs stashed inside them lol.
I dont know what the numbers at the end mean so all I would do (if you cant find a local wrecker that has one for you) is buy it from ebay from a reputable seller with super high ratings. If you cant find any local in america we have a ton in Australia. I could probably hook you up with a local wrecker and have him send it out to you or I can grab it for you. He has all the parts I want like a new Nardi steering wheel lol and OEM leather gear ****. His yard is littered with proteges.
If you talk to a local mazda dealer they may shed some light on what the letters mean. If your car is manual then you need an ECU that is manual. Its more important that you match the ECU to your engine size and transmission type so it could stand for the transmission and fuel type if there was a version that didnt use unleaded.
There are some technicians online here that I think work for mazda.
Hopefully that useless mechanic that worked on your car didnt change your parts out. My brother just tonight told me he left his HSV LS3 at a mechanics for 2 days to get his injectors cleaned. When he picked it up his oil pressure gauge stopped working so he took it back to them and they pulled the whole dashboard off to troubleshoot a gauge. Im like...dude wtf, stop taking your car to mechanics! lol. But yeah ask online first. Learn to turn a wrench, you will save money in the long run and you will learn some valuable skills that are transferrable to your next car.
Just read another thread that GRIM commented on and he was saying something about you may need to get your ECU reprogrammed by a dealer to match your VINN. Not sure if your car came with an immobiliser but it may be something you need to think about when replacing the ECU. I would definitely talk to a dealer in this scenario since you dont have a local wrecker that can just give you all plug n play parts you need. I was thinking of converting my girlfriends 1.6 from auto to manual so needed to replace ECU and transmission and all the supporting parts then wrecker was like...oh youll probably need the ignition and key locks to go with the new ecu (didnt cost much) but when he told me about putting in the replacement ignition i was like....meh im not really in the mood for that lol.
If you want to go the more expensive route you could also look at getting an aftermarket ECU (Haltech) and get a technician to install it for you and tune your car for you. Then youd have an excuse to mod it. The 1.6 in my opinion seems like a more reliable car to turbo charge for street use cause the walls between the cylinders are a bit thicker so in my opinion again would be a stronger engine to boost for a streeter (200-300hp)
