HELP! 99 Protege bogging out
99 Protege LX (1.6)
I've had other problems with this thing trying to get it running after having to remove the timing belt:
- Compression test good
- New head gasket
- New MAF sensor
- New TP sensor
- New fuel pump
- New fuel pressure regulator
- New pressure control solenoid
- New pulsation damper
- New injector (piston 1)
The car turns on fine and idles fine but when I open the throttle it just bogs out and quits. PLEASE HELP!!!!
By the way, if I spray a constant flow of starting fluid and open the throttle she rev's up real good.
TIA.

RE: HELP! 99 Protege bogging out
Are you sure you installed the timing belt right? I just put a new timing belt on a 1.5 twin cam last week.this is what happend. I took finger nail paint made paint marks on cam sprokets to keep cam timing right then took old belt off when old belt came off the cams moved. The crank shaft has a dodad that has to be lined up to a notch and cam sprocks paint marks all must line up. I ended up using some wire to hold cam sprocks in place when I installed new belt. Then I checked and rechecked by turning crank shaft 4 or 5 compleat turns.Every other turn all marks will line up. All in all sounds like your timing might be off.

RE: HELP! 99 Protege bogging out
I can't guarantee that. Heres a quick history:
a. Initially I set the timing according to Haynes. The car didn't even start
b. I then set the timing according to AllData (home user and professional editions). This got the car to start but the same result, it just bogs and quits when it's rev'd up. These two were completely different from Haynes.
c. I then took it to a mechanic who set it according to Chiltons (which was the same as Alldata). But still same result and it still dies.
That same mechanic said that he had to reset it about 75 times before getting it to start. The final setting was different from the all manuals and he said that he's seen the same problem before on other vehicles where the books were wrong for the timing.
