Horn? What? I'm scared!
Hi,
I read on carsurvey.org that 90-94 Protege's have issues with their horns going off for no reason... Reading all that makes me paranoid, I've had my Protege for about 5 months now, and I don't wanna drive with the fear of the horn going off...
Should I try to replace this foam pad (that everyone speaks of) as a preventative measure? I don't wanna be out in the middle of traffic having that thing blasting off...
The car has a great engine, but I live with the fear of everything else falling apart...

I guess you can rush out and buy a horn pad...but why?? Look at the statistics, how many of these cars were produced vs. how many specific complaints. You have a better chance of winning the lottery first!

1st. gen. Proteges are very well known for having horn pad problems. Every one I've messed with needed a new one. Prolly replaced 5 or 6 of them in the 4 years we've owned the cars. They're inexpensive($12-$20) and easy to replace. I'd say just replace it.

If you get this worked up about a minor issue on your Protege, you wouldn't be any happier with any other vehicle. They all have minor problems documented that have a 1% (or less) chance of happening. I think, replace it if it bugs you, but I doubt you decrease the odds of a problem if you do so.

The horn pad in my 91 323 is the same. Rather than change it I just pulled the horn fuse as I never use the horn anyway. Guess I figure this, rather then spend that 1-2 seconds required to honk the horn, I would rather try to avoid the accident. Makes sense to me anyway.
