Default Interference engine

Hi,
I have a 1999 Mazda Protege ES with a 1.8L FP engine. I am trying to determine whether this is an interference engine or not. I've looked around on the internet, and only found a few people mentioning it and some said it was interference, while others say that it is not.

Can somebody tell me for sure?

Thanks a lot!

nope. no one can tell you for sure from my experience. i have had people tell me that they are 100% interference and some people tell me that they are 100% non-interference. even some service manuals say the same. there isn't a straight answer out there, to be honest with you. the only real way to tell is to check clearances or try to turn the motor with the timing belt off. i wouldn't recommend the second one, but it would definitely tell you.
