Default Looking at a 2003 Protege 5

I had a 2002 P5 for about 17 years from new before it couldnt get through smog in CA any more with 250k miles. I found an identical 2003 model but with automatic transmission (mine was manual) and I'm going to look at it this afternoon. about 75000 miles on it - 2.0L 4 cylinder engine. What should I look for and check mechanically? Im going to assume that it will need new timing belt at the least anyway and Im budgeting for that. Any hints from the knowledge base?

Also is the 2.0L an interference engine (ie does a broken timing belt carry the potential for engine damage? EDIT - ok got that sorted, thanks internet.

Biggest issue is going to be rust. Paint & cosmetic 2nd.

Just remember, in CA, the seller is responsible for smog testing. Make sure they have a valid smog certificate before you commit (within last 90 days)
