Lowering 4 cheap?..??..?.....
Got a question, I want to lower my car like a inch. I don't want to spend money on some expA springs. A friend and I was thinking of either cutting the springs or getting spring compressers. Cutting would cost zero dollars, but there would b no going back unless I got new springs if wemessed up. Compressers would cost a little bit. I'm also going to look for used springs or compressers on ebay. What do yall guys think? My friend told me I should ask to see if anyone has cut springs b4, so I could learn about it and not make any stupid mistakes that they might have. Any help/info would b great. Thanks guys and gals.

Spring compressors are used to install or remove springs, not to make them shorter.
Cutting the springs is a cheap way out that yield poor performance. When you cut them often you are removing a ground or closedend to the spring so that when you go to reinstall them, they don't sit straight and yourcar ends up crooked.
New springs aren't that expensive ($200) and they are worth every penny.
Your car will ride like complete crap with cut springs.
I recommend Eibach pro-kits, they're right around a 1" drop on a Mazda3.
If you really need afree way to lower your car, pile some friends in it. Then if you don't like the ride height, ask them to get out.

I have to agree. Bad move.
And how would you cut high tensile spring steel? Your hack saw ain"ta" gonna do it my friend. Torching them would also take the tensile out of part of it and the spring will likely collapse.
Checking eBay for a good used set of GOOD QUALITY... now that's the best idea you've had so far. I bought my H&R's that way.$75 for the set shipped to my door. But be patient, cause those kind o deals don't come along every day.
And stay away from the cheapy no-name/no-reputation brands.
I don't think you mean spring compressors either, but spring clamps for clampping 2 coils together. It's an old school way of doing things, but frankly it never worked that well back then either.
Besides, the 3 series has two completely different types of coils. You be hard pressed to even come close to getting the ride even.
Cheap?Yes! A mistake? YES!

Megan Racing Performance Lowering Springs are constructed of SAE 9254 Cold Wounded Steel, one of the strongest materials available. The high tensile strength and phosphate powder coating delivers outstanding spring rates that are extremely durable and resist premature “sagging”.
The result is a spring that specifically offers racecar handling, yet maintains smooth and comfortable ride characteristics. Carefully matched springs rates provide exceptional handling, response, control and balance. These springs offer a generous drop to your car while remaining very “streetable” by having enough clearance to avoid bottoming-out; and the lowered center of gravity improves performance and increases stability, as well as enhancing the appearance of the vehicle. (Note: Spring rates and drop amount vary by different vehicle application and chassis load.)
Spec:
- Color in ORANGE
- Lower 2" front and 1.9" rear
- Springs rate - 250 Front and 230 Rear
- MSRP: 169.95
I would say though that a 2 & 1.9" drop is a lot and you're gonna have some serious tire wear. W/adjustable upper rear camber links you might get it close, but I don"t know what you will have to do with the front suspension to get a good alignment out of them?
Seems a bit much for a DD and a lot of trouble to me.

RE: Lowering 4 cheap?..??..?.....
Oh, the other thing that I forgot to mention is that you'd better expect to buy new shocks/struts (+/-$600.) A drop of that much will put a catastrophic strain on the OE and they will die within months. I've heard of it happening before.

RE: Lowering 4 cheap?..??..?.....
Owwwww...... Wasn't planning on new shocks or struts, was worried bout it though. Hmmm, mabye I will just save it and go ahead and buy the Megan racing exhaust and some engine mounts that don't suck like crap. I saw a 93 Camaro Z28 today, completely stock and so-so condition I could prbly trade my car straight up for. The car is in my town. I have another baby on the way and a new born car seat would b a pain getting in and out of there. Plus with gas the way it is, it is something to think about... What do yall think??
