Default New muffler?

Hi, new here and am not a huge car guy (love cars, but not my main hobby) so I thought I'd ask you people:

I own a 99 Protege (automatic unfortunately) and want to make it sound a little...cooler (throaty, deeper)...if you will. Would a new performance muffler do that for me? I thought about a cat-back, but its expensive and the performance gains won't be enough to justify it.

So yeah, to paraphrase: Would it sound good to get a new performance muffler.

Thanks in advance!
Ethan.

It will sound better if you get a cat back. Dont go and buy a large can muffler that you see on many cars I hate the way they sound and are a waste of money.

Hmm, well maybe I'll think about the cat a little more. Would you have a suggestion muffler wise to make it sound better without sounding like crap?

I would suggest a racing beat exhaust. It wont give off the high ricer sound... it has the deeper tone you are looking for.
