OLD Protege - 1990 dohc
start/stall problem. runs incredible, when running. started out with dirty fuel tank problem, clogged filter, etc. Drained and cleaned tank and replaced everything in sight. Ran great for while, then would stop when running, wait several minutes, started and ran fine. Got worse over several months, would start when cold, then stop when warm often, then all the time. Now won't start. Changed coil, wires, ingniters, harnesses, pressure regulator, plugs, swapped computer, map air, fuel and main relays,etc.etc. Timing and belts ok. Vacuum ok (when running), good mileage and compression when running. no oil leaks, no burning oil, no obvious vacuum leaks. Getting good fuel from pump to rail. engine turns over when you spray starting fluid in, till gone. Obviously not getting fuel now. changed all sensors, incl ox sensor. cleaned all contacts. have not swapped/ changed distributor. Saw something about a "trigger contact" problem on fuel injected distributor unit for another car. adjusted throttle position sensor. Any ideas?

RE: OLD Protege - 1990 dohc
from myself (runnels). I found the problem. It was a bad distributor. Swapped this out and it runs great with one exception. The extra distributor I had on hand (from salvage) apparently is not 'set' to align at top dead center in the middle range of adjustment. If you turn it to extreme position, car runs and idles fine, but looks, at timing light marks, like it is way off. I don't know how to 'adjust' the shaft on this 2t2 distributor to re-center it. It looks like it is 'off' about 60degrees? That is why I asked about the normal vacuum on this engine. Can you get timing accurately by adjusting to vacuum? I have a tunable timing light that may set at 60 degrees and wonder if that would show it to line up at tdc? Any ideas
