Default Pumping sound when turning steering

I got a weird sound when I turn the steering wheel right or left while the car is stopped. It sounds just like using a plunger in a toilet or some type of air pump. Kind of like if you you popped your lips loud. Everything on the suspension looks fine. It sounds like it is coming from the middle bottom of the engine, not near the PS pump. I don't think it is the inner tie rod because the wheels have no play in them on either side and I had a Quest with a worn inner tie rod and it sounded nothing like this (more like a thump when first turned). The turn is smooth except for the sound. It is pretty loud and makes the noise whether the wheel is turned a little or all the way when you then turn the wheel left and right a little. It almost sounds like the steering is grabbing something rubber or plastic and popping it. Anyone know what this is?
Thanks for your help.
My 2000 Mazda Protege is the best car I have ever owned, trouble free, runs like brand new. 162,000 miles.

Default Found the problem

A broken strut and upper strut bearing broken.
The failed strut was moving back and forth when I turned the steering and making the pumping sound.
Kind of like a cry for help.
Too many potholes in my city.
I have ordered new struts for both sides.
