RE: tach help
The DX and LX have different ECM's which the Tach signal runs through in the protege, so going to the boneyard and getting a guage cluster from and LX will not work. However, there are a few aftermarket guage companies that make good units at a reasonable price. I have used 1 Auto-meterin all my race cars for the past ten years, just keep pulling out of each car, sending it for a calibration, and right straight into the new race car every couple of years. If you arenot really sure of yourself on the install, let a pro do it. It will save you alot of greif. At least call Mazda (or post here)and find out where the Redline for your motor should be. Costs, a newBasic Auto meter in dash is about $100, with some features and a shift light, $150-200Mine is a racer pack with adjustable redline and tell-tale switch, goes for $350 now. Install labor should be no more than $150. Don't go trying to mount an aftermarket in that gauge cluster, there is no room. If I was going to do it, I would mount it, 1. On top of the dash near theA pillar at the left hand side of the driver. OR 2. On the top of the steering column, but that plastic piece is kind of flimsy. OR 3. Down near the shifter. Good luck..

RE: tach help
it will cost you about 120-130 bucks. i have a protege dx which also didnt have a tach. i spent 50 on a tach at pepboys and i had cartoys install it and was $70. i tried intalling it myself but it was a pain. you wound be better off have someone else install it.
redline for your car is 6500
i mounted mine at the bottom of the pillar so it sits in the bottom left corner of the windshield and it turned out great. to mount it on your dash you would have to drill through the dash.
