Default ticking sound from motor

My protege's motor is making a ticking sound from the top of the motor on the intake side and is also whistling from the same area, any ideas?

You didn't provide nearly enough data.

What type (including engine), year, and mileage for your car ?
Any prior history of engine issues ? Any bad idling, stalling, poor road performance issues or symptoms?
Smell of gas or exhaust ?
Is the "check engine light" on? Do you know how to reset it?

Get yourself a 2 ft. piece of tubing like garden hose, use it as a stethoscope and earball your way around the area where you hear the whistle until you pinpoint the source.

Answer all the questions above as best you can, and post the data and the results of your observations here: that way somebody might be able to help.

Ah Ha !!! Km. not miles, eh ? Another Canuckstani, eh ?

OK, you didn't provide the answers to the other questions I asked, and they are very important.
But maybe there's enough to get you started.

Read the Adams S post:
"I have a 2000 Mazda Protege, 1.8L with 5 speed manual transmission @
190,000 kms."

Now, forget about the stuff I wrote about the ignition system for now,
but really focus on the intake air plumbing section.
My guess is that the big black duct between the air filter and the engine has got a big split in it (maybe is even fractured) between the MAF and the intake.
If so, you can do a temporary duct tape fix to confirm.
If that's not the problem, do a thorough visual check for all the intake and vacuum piping associated with the engine. Something may have broken or disconnected.
Then follow up with the garden hose stethoscope if you haven't found the culprit.

The ticking you hear is very possibly a relay or actuator in the air intake/ throttle body area trying in vain to compensate for the primary problem, which, as I say, is most likely the "plumbing". Locate the ticking thing too though, that will help to diagnose what is going on.
You could also try your cruise control too, to see if it behaves.
The reason I suggest this is that if you have intake problems, but cruise control works, and will hold a constant speed, this means your vacuum side (i.e. downstream of the throttle plate) is at least sort of OK; if it won't do its job, then the problem is downstream.
If cruise control behaves, then the problem is likely to be on the upstream (i.e. on the air intake) side.
Get back to us once you've done your homework, and let us know how you're making out. Good luck, (and don't spend any big bucks yet.)
