metering oil pump problem
I took my 1989 rx7 gxl non turbo to the dealer. A mechanic told me I needed a new metering oil pump and the cost would be 2472.00 dollars. It's very steep price to pay for a used car. Also, I'm not sure if I ruined the car more by driving the car in this condition. Is this bad on the engine? How about the seals? The engine warning light turned on, that is how everything started.

RE: metering oil pump problem
There are only two fault codes that point to a oil metering pump failure and they are 20 and 27. 37 is listed but redirects you to the ignition system check. Do you know what code was stored? There are tests to perform depending on which was set and different thing can found to be at fault besides the pump depending upon the test results. It is certainly not unheard of you an older car like that to come into a shop and when a pump code is stored it is automatically condemned without proper testing.
Do not know if you hurt the engine yet but you will if the pump is not metering oil and you continue to drive. The combustion sealing rings of a piston engine are lubricated by splash as well as oil nozzles in some cases. The rotary engine on the other hand depends 100% on the metering pump to provide lubrication for the combustion seals (ie apex, side, and corner buttons). The pump actually meters crankcase engine oil into the intake and combustion chambers based on throttle and rpm to keeps those seals from burning up. If you want to double check the diagnosis I should be able to fax you the procedures and checks to determine the exact cause of malfunction.
They are steep on the price as well. MSRP is $1839.20 + maybe $20 for the gaskets. If it is faulty and you decide to replace do not waste too much time. There are only 8 left in US warehouses and one actually in stock at Mazda of Roswell in Georgia.

RE: metering oil pump problem
I will get the code tomorrow in the day time. Also, I should mention that while I was driving, I noticed for the first time my car started to lose power and barely could move. I hope it is not serious.
