I recently purchased a 1991 RX-7 contertable. It has 113,000 miles. When I bought it, I had no problems other than a little oil leak. Two weeks ago I tried to start it and after several attempts, it started. However, it blew alot of white smoke doing it. I tried to restart it a few days later, and it will not start. I checked the coilsby the method in my Haynes manual. They ahave about 1 ohm of resistance. I pulled the spark plugs and the top plugs had some fuel on them and the lower plugs did not. I suspect no spark. What typically causes this and how hard is it to fix? Also, where do they normally leak oil? It seems to accumulate on the shroud forward of the engine on the drivers side. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

 

White smoke would indicate coolant.Water in the combustion chamber will no doubt hinder starting.Blue smoke is oil.

 

Thanks. I got it started using the technique of removing the upper plugs and the EGI fuse. I turned the engine over a bit and replaced everything and it started fine. Still looking to find out common areas in the front of the engine for oil leaks. Mine seems to be leaking on the drivers side somewhere on the front of the engine. I have oil on the lower cover under this area.

 

I'm not sure about about you're year RX7 but on 93 and up, there are 2 plastic lines that run across the front of the motor to the oil metering pump. These lines are covered with a cloth type insulation.With age the plastic gets hard and the lines tend to leak The oil metering pump is locacted at the lower front passenger side of motor. The lines snake their way under and around the water pump housing to the base of the upper pleinum. Makes an oil leak hard to find. Good luck. Jim

 

Didn't sound liek an oil problem. Sounded like either flooding ora water seal failure, I'd hope it was flooding. Try to stay on top of your temperature guage and make sure the cooling system is fine. If it IS the waterseal, you'll need a rebuild, if it's flooding, a fuel pump cutoff switch would be a good ghetto rig(real fix is almost always replace injectors but $$$$)
