i really dont know that much about rotary, but i F*cking LOVE my car, and im slowly learnin a hell of alot about them...but i was wondering how to tell which 87 rx7 mine is, i was told its a gxl but then ive been reading and dont gxls have back seats...?, mine has the ajustable suspension, leather bucket seats, and dual exhaust ( if that helps any) if anyone can help me solve my little problom i would really appriciate it

your cars is deff a 87 GXL. I've seen some weird combos. I have seen a Turbo 2 with the 2+2 Setup...

 

Yeah the adjustible suspension is deffinately the deciding factor that it's a GXL. The rear seats were added later. I bet they're not leather.

 

Rear seats were not available at all in the United States. Some dealers were able to special order them from Japan, since the chassis was the same and if you removed the storage bins the seats would bolt up.

Also a company called Pacific Avatar made a backseat conversion kit. I recently sold mine for $250. It was for a FB.

The backseats were available everywhere else BUT the USA. This was because when the RX7 was first introduced Congress had more strict bumper laws. The SA22 had more frame supports instead of the backseats

a gxl is a gen. 2 model with a 12A engine n/a wit stock dual exhaust...
i think its max hp was around 230 i think...im not sure but its a great car after a few changes...

 

Your a moron. NO 2nd Gen came with a 12A they all had 13B unless it was the turbo then it had a 13BT. As for hp your looking at around 146. He said his car was an 87 and that year the turbo's only had 197hp. There's no way a 12A without a trubo would come close to the 230 mark. Read up on your facts before you post and look like a jackass

By the way...the information you gave about the '87 turbos having 197 hp is incorrect. They only had 182 until '89. I know because I still own an '88 turbo - but I will refrain from calling you names even though you were wrong and should "read up on your facts before you post".
