So far the Renisis has not been too bad of an engine. Is only a few years old yet with most having few miles so only time will tell. The auto trans equipped cars I have heard have been having so low compression problems but seems to be related in part to high ambient temps. I am sure Mazda is working on a reason why and a fix but have not heard of one yet.
The 238hp is only available with the manual trans. Not an option with the auto.

Is there a different engine in the auto trans to have less hp or is it built different? would the engine in the manual compare to a 4 cylinder or v6?

I have the manual, and I would think it's close to a 6cyl but feels like a Hemi!

The main differences are in the air intake and fuel delivery. The high power has 6 injectors per rotor housing as opposed to 4 in standard. The high power also gets Auxiliary Port Valves or APV that provides an additional air intake passage into each rotor housing at medium to high speeds. I am sure there are some other tweekings that have been done as well but those are the two big hp adders.

In comparison to a piston type engine it would be closer to a V6. There are three combustion chambers per rotor housing a two rotor housings which would give you a total of 6 combustion chambers like a V6.
Took a pic of the demo model that sales was going to get rid of but I confiscated. Shows how the internals look and even turns. You are looking into the front rotor housing. The triangle shaped piece in the center is the rotor and is surrounded by the rotor housing. Note the three different chambers. Rear rotor looks identical.

Hey all!

Been looking/dealiing on a used 2004 RX-8 w/ 11, 600 miles, auto, base model from a Mazda dealer. I ran the VIN thru Carfax and it came up clean with the gas tank recall the only one showing as needed. All the discussions here in the Forum has me seriously reconsidering.

Thoughts?

The 2004 I'm looking at has an asking price of $24,995. The Internet direct - manager price is $20,995.

But what gives with the oil every 2k miles and the replacement engines? Seems like it would be common knowledge or fodder for "Dateline" and "60-Minutes" if the manufacturer is selliing a $25- $30,000 auto with these design atributes.

I still like the Mazda designs but ...

I'd be shocked if you could show me a rotary powerplant that doesn't consume oil. I don't think it's ever going to happen. They're simply designed that way.
