05 Mazda Tribute Sound Processor
We have a 2005 Tribute that has experienced reoccurring starting problems. Today the dealership determined a problem with the Sound Processor. It does not turn off every time the car is turned off and drains the battery. The Sound Processor needs to be replaced, $884!!
Questions:
Is the Sound Processor basically the amplifier that powers the stereo system?
If so, are there cheaper aftermarket Sound Processors?

No, this unit is before the amp if there is an amp installed, the processor just remaps the equalizer curves that are being output from your radio to a "better" form. It also allows you to time when sound arrives to different speakers so the sound seems to be coming right from the windshield and not the doors. Basically it makes your headunit sound much better than it normally would...........when it works as you found out. Here is a link to give you options on what to get if you want aftermarket. http://www.crutchfield.com/shopsearc...%3b+Processors
