Default 2001 Tribute engine turns but will not start

I was driving along at 50mph when my 4cyl engine just quit. I stepped down on the gas pedal, the car bucked a bit then I just cruised to a stop. Trying to start it up again, the engine turns but will not turn over. No check engine light. Is there any way to check the fuel pump or injectors at home? Fuel filter, air filter, and plugs have 23,000 miles on them. I do not see a fuel leak or smell one for that matter. Any other suggestions like a sensor or something? Thanks in advance.

Hi Ric,

I too have a 2.0L tribby, it did the same last year and turned out to be the fuel pump fuse. Situated under the bonnet in the fuse box, a 20 amp fuse and all was well in the world once more.

If this does not work, you could try turning over the engine and then checking the plugs for contamination. If the pump is working, they will smell of fresh petrol and be wet with it.

To go suddenly like that, it does sound like a fuel problem, have you added any fuels to the tank, just in case.

I used to run a discovery which told me I have half a tank full as I ran out of fuel. Just tap the fuel tank with a spanner underneath to see if it sounds empty.

After that, I am scratching my head a little but keep us posted

Darren, thanks for the reply back. I turned the iginition to on (last night) and the fuel pump moaned like a sick animal. I tried this several times, key on-key off, and heard nothing more with the exception of that first time. I could not hear this when the incident occurred (two days ago) which left me to wonder if it was electrical. I did check the fuse and the kill switch located under the glove box on the right side panel and both were good, so I am going to go with a confident assumption it is the fuel pump. Will update when I replace the pump.
