Fuel Gauge Fault

Fuel Gauge Fault
Hi,
This is my first post, I'm from Brisbane, Australia and recently purchased a Silver 04 Tribute Limited Traveller.
Filled the fuel tank yesterday and when I started the car the gauge read empty and the fuel light remained on. Over a period of about an hours driving the needle slowly rose, the fuel light went out and now the gauge shows the correct reading. Any idea what the problem is / was? It's a 2.3 04 Auto Tribute, Thanks in advance.

I never worked out what caused it but around this time the alternator died and after replacing it everything went back to normal. Can't see how they're related but I know there are some electronics attached to this alternator.(maybe that's why it cost $700 to replace).
