Default Instrument cluster has a mind of it's own? Gauges go crazy sometimes.

So, one time I was driving along in my moms Tribute (2004 DOHC V6 2wd Automatic) going to ride BMX and the gauges go all the way up, then go to zero. A split second later it goes back to normal and gives me readings like it usually does. It does this every now and then. What's the problem here? Why does it do that?
I searched, I didn't find any real answers.
TIA!
