Stupid question, but is it the correct key? Your Mazda key has basically the same cut as other Mazdas and Fords. If you have another Ford or Mazda key on your ring, that might be the problem. Otherwise, the key cylinder is malfunctioning and will probably need to be replaced. It's rare, but this happened to a friend of mine who had a Focus. Unfortunately, replacement usually includes the entire ignition switch assembly.

I had this VERY same problem. I thought I was crazy, I pulled on the steering wheel, and everything. I was at work, had other people come out and try it as well. I caught a ride home, called the dealership, and had to have it towed in.
My steering column had completely locked up. They had to order me a new column straight from Mazda. I'm glad I still had it under extended warranty.

Key or lock cylinder wear will do it too. If you have a spare key, try it. If it works well, it was the key. If it works, but badly, or not at all, it's the cylinder or steering lock mechanism that's faulty.
