Default Possible power steering pump problem?

I maybe way off, but the first thing I would question is the power steering system in my wifes 2006 Tribute V6. Her car always had a sound when you turn the steering wheel, but now it's a bit louder. There are no problems while driving the car, but when you turn, it's noticeable to the ear. Has anybody had similar sounds/problems? When I hear sounds like this, I think something is going to go eventually. I would love to catch it before it's too late.

For those knowledgeable folks, could this be the PS pump or a bad rack and pinion (steering column)?

My first thought is that on my 2010 Tribute that I bought yesterday, the manual describes the power steering as electrical assist on rack and pinion, I don't know in which year they may have switched from hydraulic assist to the electric motor assist.
