Why do both cigarette lighters retain power after vehicle is off?
Just got a 2011 tribute, and both lighter plugs retain power after I shut the vehicle off. This is very annoying since I have a satellite radio plugged in I would like it to turn off when I exit the vehicle. I previously had a cx-7 and the dash lighter plug would lose power when I shut the car off. In the new tribute even when I take the key out and open the door the car radio turns off but power to thensatelite radio stays on. Is there anything I can do or do I just have tomget used tomturning thensatelite radio off each time I stop somewhere? Thanks.

I don't know for sure, but remember, "Ford gives you better ideas" and a Tribute is a Ford vehicle in spite of the Mazda badge.
It's only been in the last 20-25 yrs that power to the lighter was made to go off w/the key. Before that, they always did have power to them. Their are arguments for both camps of thinking, I'm sure.
I am guessing that its because they expect some people to charge their iPods, iPhones, lap tops and other modern electronic devices when the vehicle is off.
Another guess is that both "power outlets" get their power from the same source, so if one's on, they both are.
You may need to tap power from a switched source for your radio if this bothers you.

I have the opposite problem: both power outlets in my 2012 Mazda5 lose power when the engine is off. I would like for the dash outlet to retain power so my phone etc. will continue to charge. My 2007 CX-9 was different - - one of the two front outlets DID retain power.
Does anyone know what's involved in changing the cigarette lighter outlet to a "hot" outlet?
