Lightbulb 2009 MAZDA 2 DE 1.5lt Auto - Coolant Choice

The Mazda 2 came with a newly fitted (2 weeks in the car <100km) Replacement Radiator.
“Brand: FloKool, Model: RAD1476” (suits Auto), Aluminium Core, resin plastic Top & Bottom.
Enquires through Parts Supplier to Manufacturer confirm it has SILICON Gaskets between the Aluminium Core & the resin plastic Top & Bottom.

STICKER on RADIATOR - FloKool Part No RAD1476 Date Code AUG2003 MADE IN INDONESIA
Description
Tank Material Plastic
Core Material Aluminium
Core Width 555mm
Core Height 350mm
Core Thickness 24mm
Oil Cooler Size 275mm
Core Rows 1
Developed for the New Zealand and Australian market
Built to meet or exceed OE specs
Superior cooling ability
Light weight
2-year or 50,000km warranty (whichever occurs first)

###########
The Mazda 2 came with FL22 from new Japan Factory.

A MAZDA Radiator Cap ND 1.1. FL22 is fitted
(noted AUD$67 from Dealership Parts, expensive compared to Toyota parts.)

Pg8-17 MAZDA 2 OWNERS MANUAL
"Soft Demin Water in the Coolant
Top up with the correct Coolant Mixture, Don’t use Water Only
Engine has ALUMINIUM Parts & MUST be protected by an ethylene-glycol-based coolant
NO alcohol, methanol, Borate or Silicate"

###########
Previous owner had put RED SCA House brand coolant in the car.

SCA Long Life Red Coolant Concentrate 5 Litre
Details
https://www.supercheapauto.com.au/p/...re/591864.html
Features:
Premium quality organic acid technology (OAT) offers long life anti-freeze/anti-boil protection
Carboxylate technology (a SUB FORM of 2-EHA) coolant contains no silicates, borates, phosphates, nitrites, nitrates or amines
Red Type "A" concentrate
Temperature Range (50% Mix): Freeze -36.2°C, Boil 108.2°C

???????
So off down the Coolant Rabbit Hole to work out if it was suitable for use in the MAZDA 2.

2-Ethylhexanoic acid = 2-EHA

SCA Tech Advice confirms their RED & GREEN SCA House Brand Coolant contains a small amount of 2-EHA.....does not disclose that on the bottle

FL22 coolant is a long-life coolant, 10yrs / 250,000kms

Absolute maximum to first change "in theory" NOTED it is outside the warranty period & beyond the typical first ownership so not a MAZDA Dealership problem.....
How many 10yr old Mazda's are being driven by 1st owner & still being serviced by Mazda Dealerships or an independent workshop using MAZDA Specific Fluids ie Not Multi-Vehicle Fluids?
Suggest less than 5% of the new car sales, most leave "MAZDA Dealership Service Schemes" at 5Years or 7Years at the end of the "Capped Price Service" schedule & less than 160,000kms.

The options are full flush, remove thermostat & blow out the block with compressed air & then up to 5.4lt required:
[a] Toyota Super Long Life PINK Coolant 50/50 Premix using 2 of 5lt = AUD$84
or
['b] FORD Motorcraft VC-13-G FIRNo 200142 Concentrate WSS_97B57_A1 01, YELLOW Coolant using 1 of 3.78lt = AUD$70
or
[c] MAZDA FL22 55/45 Premix using 2 of 5lt = AUD$360

Concentrate makes the flush & achieving a 50/50 outcome easier than 50/50 premix.

###########
###########

So what are others doing when they are required to completely flush the MAZDA cooling system?

Are you paying AUD$360 for Mazda FL22 Premix to flush all of the previous coolant out?….surely not?

Thoughts?

I would drain & fully flush the whole cooling system with water. Refill with water, drive it for a day, drain it, flush it again and add about 4 litres of Penrite green concentrate coolant.

Thankyou for the reply Grim.
Your process WRT changing the coolant is similar to what I have in mind.

Interestingly, Independent Workshops that use Penrite Fluids have the same recommendation as it provides "the Penrite Warranty".

Was concerned that it contains Borate.
SFAIAA It also contains 2-EHA

Hi Grim,
When I was digging around on the forum I noted an older post from yourself:

I've noticed in alot of Mazda's the coolant does go from green to yellow to brown ( not rusty) if not changed for a long long time. Also the overflow bottles/tanks will be stained too."

Do you have thoughts on Years/time to this challenge? would you say 7Yrs on FL22?
Is there a noticeable PH change when the coolant discolourisation occurs?

I notice Mazda's run hotter than Toyota (3SFE, 3SGE, 1ZZFE, 2ZRFE, 2AR-FE etc). Using Non contact Thermometer & Thermography Camera to benchmark against the OBD2 PID indicates the 2009 MAZDA 2 OBD2 PID is sufficiently accurate.

=>> Maybe this elevated Temperature 100 Deg C or more leads to evaporation of the Demin Water out of the "FL22 Coolant Mixture" in the Non Pressurised Overflow/Header Tank?
...& Probably Why the later MAZDA Cars have the Pressurisation Cap on the Overflow/Header Tank instead of on Top of the Radiator?

Your thoughts?

How about
PrixMax JNK Blue Extended Life (P-OAT) Concentrate 5L Bottle JNKB-C5
The SDS doesn't list 2-EHA. I'm sending them an email to confirm.

As I don't have a high pressure air line to flush out the old coolant from the engine block, I'm inclined to just keep adding distilled water, running up the RPM to open thermostat and circulate, re-drain, then repeat until it drains out clear. Either that or take it to a shop who will do your proposed method.

WRT "PrixMax JNK Blue Extended Life Antifreeze/Coolant (P-OAT) 5L Bottle JNKB-C5"
Noted that it is $68 for 5lt plus shipping?
I have not used JNKB-C5.
=>> Toyota Super Long Life Coolant PartNo 08889_80431 is cheaper, an excellent product & readily available in stock from the Local Toyota Dealer.

"Recommended for use in Honda, Hyundai, Infiniti, Kia, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru and Suzuki vehicles"
=>> Interesting that Toyota is not Mentioned.
"Up to 5 years or 250,000kms of service protection."

[38] Decide if a 3rd or 4th Demin Water Flush is required
Pg10-5 MAZDA 2 Owners Manual 8AB6 Form No. 8AB6-EO-08J
"MAZDA 2 with Auto Transmission = 5.0Litres Capacity"
?? Is that Plus “The Header Reservoir”? Or is the 5.0lt Capacity the total volume including the “The Header Reservoir”?
Noted 400ml is contained in the “Header Reservoir” at the Full Line

If we consider 5.0lt Capacity as the Total Volume including the “The Header Reservoir”
5.0 Lt - 0.4Lt = 4.6lt in Block, Radiator, Heater Core & Hoses
The Demin Flushes reduce by dilution the Residual Concentration of Initial Fluid:
1st Demin Flush 4.6-3.75 = 0.85lt residual, which leaves 18.48% Concentration of Initial Fluid
2nd Demin Flush leaves 4.6-3.75 = 0.85lt residual, which leaves 3.41% Concentration of Initial Fluid
3rd Demin Flush leaves 4.6-3.75 = 0.85lt residual, which leaves 0.631% Concentration of Initial Fluid
4th Demin Flush leaves 4.6-3.75 = 0.85lt residual, which leaves 0.117% Concentration of Initial Fluid
If you are DIY, you have the time & you intend to keep the car,....well you can do what you like.
If you are paying someone to do this for you.....time is money.....& You get what you get.

"PrixMax JNK Blue Extended Life Antifreeze/Coolant (P-OAT) 5L Bottle JNKB-C5"
Noted that it is $68 for 5lt plus shipping?
I assume so, although shipping should be similar from any seller for the same 5L weight. The PrixMax JNK Blue is concentrated so it will make ~10L Compare that to the price for 5L of pre-mixed (50:50) Toyota Super Long Life costing say $43, $68 is less than double that price so it is cheaper once diluted. Granted one might prefer a pre-mix over a concentrate.

Thanks for the link to the dilution calculations. Mine will be different as I have a Mazda 3 =>larger block => more flushes with demineralised water required to achieve the same % remnant of old coolant. I got my 2013 model 2nd hand last year, The reservoir is marked FL22 and the coolant mix colour is greeny blue meaning I reckon the prior owner did not flush the green out of the block and just added some blue after draining once.

Toyota SLLC 5lt 50/50 was AUD$36 ea when you buy four (4)
Only used 1 on the Mazda 2.....have just been driving it.....still deciding if it is a Keeper.....If it is a Keeper it will get a 2nd Drain & then Refill with, Toyota SLLC 5lt 50/50 which will move it from 40.8% to 48.3%.

########
WRT "PrixMax JNK Blue Extended Life Antifreeze/Coolant (P-OAT) 5L Bottle JNKB-C5"
Use their shipping estimate, .....for my location:
=$68 + $22.85 = $90.85
So in my case Pickup Toyota SLLC from the Toyota Dealer = Cheaper.

Do your own calcs on % residual for a Mazda3 & post a separate thread detailing how you get on.
MAZDA FL22 is Straight Green
Greeny Blue = You need to flush your Coolant System.

Rob.

The PrixMax contains salts of 2-EHA (attached), Listed as Sodium 2-ethylhexanoate and Potassium 2-ethylhexanoate. Then I noticed the Ford yellow listed above also has Sodium 2-ethylhexanoate so I looked and those salts have plasticising effects on rubber seals per this thread. this leaves me confused because I'm sure I read that the Ford Yellow was OK elsewhere (being a replacement for their green). More searching uncovers the root of the issues dates back to a class action against Dex-Cool//GM and this Wikipedia entry lists 2-EHA and its salts as a problem.

So I kept searching as I'm sure there were more options than the Toyota SLLC or the Mazda FL22 premixes. And I think I've found a one more reasonably priced (item 3) and 2 more way too exy (items 4 and 5)
  1. Mazda FL22
  2. Toyota SLLC
  3. Liquid Intelligence Green 102 (SDS now attached)
  4. Ravenol HJC (I suspect it will be exy though given 1.5L size)
  5. Valvoline Zerex Asian (green, blue or red) per here. - available via Amazon or eBay in Oz but too exy at $150 for 1 Gallon premix as shipped from O/S .

To uncover entry 3. I spoke with the in-house chemical expert at Liquid Intelligence and he claims (and per SDS) none of their coolants have 2-EHA. They are P-OAT and free from silicates, borates etc their Green 102 is allegedly closest to FL22. 5L concentrate for A$40 per 5L container plus $20 shipping for 1,2 or 3 (5L containers). (edit: update on 17-9-24 , They sent me the most comprehensive coolant SDS I've seen to date - no attempt to hide any proprietary ingredients, it shows NO 2-EHA (nor its salts), and the organic acid used is the same as in FL22 and SLCC - named Sebacic acid, (instead of 2-EHA). I purchased 5L of the stuff)

I wonder what Mazda service centres are doing ? IIRC the service manual doesn't instruct to flush with water nor do a pressure flush to evacuate the block, so how can they get the old coolant out and the concentration correct if they use their own FL22 premix ?
