2004 2.3 Engine noise
Hi,
My 2004 2.3 mazda 3 started making a wierd noise. It seems to be coming from near the timing chain. It's kind of a rattling noise. Also, the CEL is on. I will get it checked tomorrow. It takes longer to crank and start than usual, it revs slightly when I put the clutch in when shifting. The oil has always been full and maintained and I don't race the engine. Any ideas?

The codes are:
P0102 - Maf sensor low input signal
P0103-Maf sensor high input signal
P2229- Baro sensor circuit high input
P2088 - CMP actuator circuit low -RH OCV solenoid
P0113 - IAT circuit high input
P0401 - EGR insufficient flow detected
I've had the MAF sensor, IAT, EGR and Baro code's pulled before and I think it is a bad connection because the CEL would go off on occasion if I messed with that area, but would come on again later. The car also ran fine with just those codes. I tried to take the EGR off by following a post on one of these mazda3 pages, but am not sure I was taking the right thing off. After I put a AEM cold air intake on the CEL turned off one morning and stayed off for about 3K miles until I went over some ruts at an intersection. Now the car is missing pretty bad and seems like a vacuum leak to me. I haven't found anything loose though. I don't know what the P2088 code is. On a side note my MPG actually went from 30.5 to 30.8 which is wierd...

I won't lie, codes are still something of a mystery to me. One minor problem can cause many codes at once and it seems there is still a bit of old fashioned tinkering to be done... though with a lot more electronics involved.
In a continuing effort to learn more about these computer controlled car, I am subscribing to this thread. I want to see the outcome.

Well, the rattle was from the water pump pulley. It went out a couple days ago. I got the EGR off and it was slightly open and unable to be moved. It is cleaned up now. I pulled off some of the tape on the wires and haven't found any breaks in the wires yet. Any idea of where they typically stretch and break while using a CAI? Also, Any idea what the P2088 thing is?
