Default 2004 Mazda3 2L Engine Stutter

I have a 2004 Mazda3 automatic with 140k miles. The other day I was pulling into a parking lot and came in with the petal up, and as I came to a slow roll the car engine began to stutter, and the car shut off. I couldn't re-produce the issue right away, until today.

I was driving and did a similar action. The engine again began to stutter as I was slow rolling to a stop. The car never shut off but reved up and down a few times before I completely stopped. I later felt the stutter and was slowing in a similar form. I noticed the car was in 3rd gear as I was slowing. I was going about 20 mph when I noticed it still in 3rd.

What diagnostic can I perform? What could be the problem?

Thanks,
DV

I suspect bad gas. Is there a check engine light?

Well, yes, and but, if the rpm's are up, I'd thinkeither bad fuel, or an electrical problem with fuel schedule.
