RE: 2006 mazda 3 or 2002 subaru wrx wagon
Depending on where you live I think. I live in Los Angeles and mostly I'm staying in the city. Just daily traffic driving and sometimes
drive away little far from the city but not much have offroad situations and no snow...little bit rain so I barely need a 4WD car.
How about you? AND new car is better. Don't you?

Couple pros/cons between them.
WRX wagon Pros:
-AWD. Good if you live in the mountains, helps launches.
-More storage space than the 3 (almost 2x)
-Turbo engine. Fun to drive, gives lots of power
WRX wagon Cons:
-AWD. Makes the car heavier/ hurts fuel economy, all tires must be replaced together to keep the tread even, can make people feel invulnerable and drive outside their abilities.
-Fewer toys. The WRX (especially the 2002) comes with fewer things than the Mz3. Steering wheel audio controls, but there are other things.
-Turbo engine. Decreased fuel economy, needs premium fuel.
Mz3 Pros:
-Lighter than WRX
-plenty of power for it's size
-much better fuel economy (it's lighter and doesn't use premium)
-"snick, snick" smooth gear box
-lots of toys/gadgets available (HID, leather, climate control, steering wheel controls, moonroof
-Attractive styling. Personally I find the Mz3 much more stylish, especially on the inside.
-Tighter steering, probably owing to the electronic power steering
-A good set of snow tires will almost equal AWD in heavy snow/ice.
That's off the top of my head. Look HERE for a comparison I did between the '05 Mz3 and the Impreza Wagon/9-2X (non-turbo). Some of that still holds true even without it being about the turboed version.
