2014 Fuel Tank Capacity
Greetings. 2014 2.5L Mazda3 here. Since purchase, I can't get more than 10.5 gallons into the tank with gauge reading 0 miles to empty. If I continue filling past the pump shut off I can get maybe a half gallon before overflow. Specs say fuel capacity is 13.2 gallons. I have not run more than 10 miles past empty but is it possible to have 2.7 gallons in the tank at empty or might there be an issue with the sending unit?
I've seen some similar discussion on the CX-5 boards but no resolution. Anyone else having a similar issue? It would be really nice to get an extra 50 miles between fill ups without having to worry about running out of gas.

on our 2013 base 2.0, depending on where i fill up, i can get another 3 gallons in after shutoff. a lot depends on where you fill up, and the nozzle design at the pump. there are a couple of ways to make the gauge more accurate when near empty, one involves removing the sending unit, which is a huge hassle, another is to install resistors inline btwn the sender and the gauge. but to do that, you will have to know when the tank is actually empty, another hassle. use caution if you run the tank completely empty, the fuel pump needs fuel to keep it cool. if it runs dry, it is only a matter of seconds before it will die, then it gets expensive. on another note, our 2 99 millenias have 18 gallon tank, and in the 15 years we have had them, i have NEVER been able to fill more than 14 gallons, and only a few times at that. i just know that at about 300 miles i need to be getting gas soon.

Several additional gallons after pump shut-off is what the CX-5 posts have been saying. That seems to be related to pump nozzle / tank design. I tested this but only got about an extra gallon before I actually overflowed so it seems to be more an issue with the sending unit calibration or the tank doesn't actually hold 13.2 gal.
I am hesitant to run it to actual empty for the reason you stated. With my past Golfs, I've only had about 2 gal when the warning light came on. I find it hard to believe I can have almost 5 gal in there at the warning with the Mazda.
If anyone is able to get more than 11 gal in after empty, let me hear it.
