Default Akward Right Knee

Is there anything I can do for that awfully akwardpiece of plastic that my right knee rests on?

Yup! That's exactly what it is. That and some 1" 3M double-sided gray tape from Home Depot.
Everybody used to complain about the console a few years ago. Then they seemed to die down, so I thought that perhaps Mazda revamped the console in, oh, "06 or something.
I had two of these and didn"t know what to do w/the other. One day while cornering pretty hard and realizing that the side of my leg was killing me, VOILÀ!!

I'll have to try that, being 6'2" it starts to get annoying after about 30mi or so.

Yea, answering your question, the 08's are rough on the knees too.

I agree, but it"s not there for appearance. And the best part is... it works! It offers even more support when cornering than before for me.

Be very careful where and how you place it. The top, formerly the front, is a pretty good match for the contour of the console itself, but it is a small surface to depend upon and once set it can"t be moved w/o cutting it off and retaping it all over again.
