I think it can look perfectly fine if you do it nicely. Here's a pic from Iceysax on mazda3forums... his doesn't look too bad.

Personally I'd just like to get a shift boot that doesn't squeak when I shift.... I know they're available I just don't have the money to spend on one.

Squeaky shift boot? I haven't heard one of those since rubber shift boots were the norm.
Have you tried some leather cleaner/conditioner on it?

I cant see dropping cash and time into a cosmetic change that dosent seem to do anything that makes the car any better in any way and possibly would look lets say...not so good? $$-should = functional upgrades but thats just my opinion .Infact I believe that downgrading the flash of any car that you tune to have performance is a smart idea . Tickets can kill your fun and do big damage to your insurance . Lay low and surprize em - thats what I think. I think you can get addicted to constantly changing something thats already right on the money . so I usually ask myself , Do I need this or want it ??? and what are the real benifits versus the downside , like maintainence and future valueeffect ?
I really am not going to get into heavy modding maybe a CAI. This car is not going to be that type of ride for me. This is going to be my everyday car. I have the Bullitt to mod and get tickets in.....LOL.......No way to surprize anyone in the bullitt...

So this car would just be about visual mods and little things to make it just look a little different than the next guys.. Plus for me screwing around with my cars is like therapy for me ,it relaxes me and I have fun doing it.

Don't really car out the future value of the car, I'm just going to drive it into the ground like the lat one, That should take a while because of how well they hold up...

I've heard lots of people complain about the sqeaky boot. I haven't tried any conditioner on the vinyl boot, no.

i saw a GLI today or i think it was....well its called the rabbit by VW. I saw this in one of those cars but it still had the "D" "R" "N" and all those letters that would be on an automatic but on the side and the shift boot was just like a manual. From the side you would think its a manual. As for the squeaking ive never heard of that in my life.

Thats cool - I understand - I see you are going to put the CAI on your ride. I just had the dealer install the factory system but didnt get the exhaust with it since they claim its not a must you can do 1 or both . My question to you is : have you put the CAI on a previous Mazda 3 and if not what research did you come up with that supports this being a good move. I did it on a whim because they had a sale on the system at my dealer . So far so good and V1 says its a good move -seems like a credible person but I rarely do things without prior research like this so now that I see this huge box in my garage full of plastic black boxes and tubes I wonder if I did the right thing ?? I just dont want to deterioriate the life of my engine and or damage it with bad air/fuel mix that the ecu cant handle . But it would seem Mazda would have all that under control since it is covered under my new car warranty ? what say you ??? any feedback that can re-assure me - Thanks K

yes in the end a DSG automatic will beat a manual everyday all day...
And thats a fact.

Yes it will, and I'm quite curious about them myself. Makes me wonder if I'd go back on my long standing word to not give up shifting until I can't do it any longer.
It still seems kind of boring to me though for spirited driving. From a purely aesthetics view, hitting a paddle will never equal the physical thrill of clutching and moving the shifter around... though I'd gladly trade in my "H" pattern for a straight-line (ala WRC) shifter.
