Well if you think about it a cap. is just a bandaid on the problem rather than a solution. It does the same thing as a battery and just stores some power. If the system is going to be pulling more power than the cap can hold then it's still going to end up dimming.
A better alternator and a better battery should actually fix the problem. That being said they're more expensive than capacitors.

I used to have a system in my car (old 89 accord) that did not have a newer battery and was the original alternator and had a 2 farad cap in my car. Prior to cap I had dimming. Post cap I had no dimming, no bogging down of power, no complications, and nothing burned out.
To this day if I ever put a system in my car again...which I won't. Will use a cap.

I put an Alpine/Infinity system in a Nissan I once had. It never got stolen, but for the $1000 I had "invested" in it, I could've done a lot more to improve the vehicle. Besides, I was never happy with the sound! Every time I put in a new tape or changed the station I was playing with it trying to get it to sound like I wanted it too. After a few close calls on the road, I swore I would never do it again... and haven't.
