Default Inexpensive, decent all-season tires for 2006 Mazda3?

I'm trying to find a decent, inexpensive all-season tire for my Mazda3. I live in Minnesota, so it needs to be something decent for the winter. I drive a manual, but am not a nut about performance. I drive relatively little, mostly in town on the weekends (short distances), and then twice a week to/from the airport (20 minute, highway driving). Size I'm looking for is 195/65/R15.

I'll probably buy just front for now, and get rear tires replaced at a later date. Not sure what I'm running at the moment. The shop recommended a few different all-season tires, one of which was the Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring, the other of which was the Dunlop BW Signature II.

I've looked at various forums, read different posts, but am not satisfied with answers I've found thus far. What's a decent, inexpensive, all-around tire that will cover my needs? Once I get them, I don't want to think about them for a long time.

I've copied and pasted this from another thread:

There are no good all season tires, they are 3 season tires. They normally get hard at around 35-40 degrees Fahrenheit and start losing traction! If it doesn't have a snowflake symbol on the tire, it's useless in the winter!
Now they have All Weather Tires which are actually rated for snow. Are they as good as winter tires: no.
These Hankook's are the only choice. All Weather Tires (Optimo 4S), see the video.

And the consensus on these is that they are good tires for the money?

I have no idea how much.
I give you the only decent all season tires period!

You search for best price and size tire (should be stamped on side).

READ for tire size: https://www.mazdaforum.com/forum/whe...iptions-30377/

This does not seem to be available in the US - is there an equivalent?

Search: all weather tire
Search: Hankook

Try this: The Touring All-Season Optimo H725 combines quality with value. An innovative internal construction offers improved handling and durability, while an advanced tread pattern provides excellent wet and dry braking and winter performance with an emphasis on low road noise.

Oh look, Hankook USA: http://www.hankooktireusa.com/Produc...um=1&FnCode=01

TRY THESE all weather tires: http://tires.tirerack.com/tires/All%20Weather%20Tires

The key is "All Weather Tire" not "All season Tire" !

Yes, I searched that. You specifically recommended the 4S, and given that I know nothing about tires (hence the post to begin with), I had no idea if the 4S and the H428 and H725 were similar, or if the 4S is somehow different/better. If you look at the tread on the 4S versus the H725 that you linked, they are noticeably different. This difference, for all I know, could be the difference between a run of the mill tire and the best all-weather tire available.

I don't care if the tire I buy is Hankook or something else, I just want a good, inexpensive, all-weather tire for the vehicle. Going to Hankook's US site and searching for the 4S yielded nothing, so I was back to square one. Are Hankooks in general understood to be better than the rest?

Furthermore, you bolded/colored Optimo, but in my research I was told that most Hankook tires are called Optimo, so unless the person I spoke to was misinformed, the Optimo means little.

I understand your frustration.
The key is all weather tire that actually says it's good in snow. If it's not, then it's an all season tire (which are crap).
Unfortunately price may not agree with the all weather tire, but the all season tires are very bad!

To be quite honest, i'm not sure about those other Optimo tires?
The 4S are the ones, only in Canada, pity!

Try the other all weather tire link i supplied.
Thanks for confusion and making me take a closer look.

I smell a road trip to Canada!

No worries, thank you. I might just put this off for a while...

mspflyer:

The Tire Rack - Your performance experts for tires and wheels
has ratings and reviews on all kinds of tires. With Noggin's info and tire rack ratings you may be able to hone in on the tires of your choice.

When reading reviews look for those that have done a few thousand miles and look for those that use them on cars that are similar to yours.
