Default Listen to music via AUX cord, but control via bluetooth

I'm wondering if this is possible. I just got my 2016 Mazda3 yesterday and I was really excited about being able to control my phone's media with the steering wheel controls, but this only seems to work if the phone is connected via bluetooth or USB. The problem with bluetooth is that connection has relatively poor audio quality, and the problem with USB is that for some reason, it takes forever to load and begin playing and it doesn't load the music that's on my SD card for whatever reason.

So I'm hoping that I can either get the USB connection to work better (access SD card, and quickly) or allow the car to control the phone via bluetooth, but listen to the AUX channel.

My other option is to just load all the music I could ever want onto an SD card and leave it on there, which doesn't seem all that practical - adding new music would be a pain.

Suggestions? Thanks!
