RE: Mazda 3 I & S? Differences
i is only available in the sedan and has the 2.0L standard, no body kit, 15" wheels std
s comes with the 2.3L, body kit, etc. Roughly $2000 difference in base price.
That said...I've got my 3i for sale right now.....

RE: Mazda 3 I & S? Differences
Most of the differences between the i and s models are aesthetic and not functional. Some of those aesthetic differences include: different speedometer clusters, different grill, different interior color (that may have changed for '07), different tail lights (pre-'07). Some of the functional differences are: well the engine displacement obviously, some HP and torque, smaller brakes, ATX only comes in 4 speed vs. the 5 speed on the s model.
I believe that ABS is now standard on all models except for possibly the very base i. Also I think side airbags are now available on i touring and up..... not sure on DTC though. As to the engine size difference from what I'm told the VVT system added to the 2.0 in '06 really pepped the engine up and overall there wasn't much performance difference between the two engines. The 2.0 definitely gets better mileage than the 2.3 though.

RE: Mazda 3 I & S? Differences
For 2007, there are actually 5 different models. I-sport, I-touring, S-sport, S-touring and S-grand touring.
Re: the tires
1.I-sport (most basic) comes with regular rims, 195/65 R15
2.I-touring, S-Sport, S-touring allcome with alloy rims, 205/55 R16
3. S-grand touring comes with alloy rims, 205/50 R17 V-rated
On all S models, you get the following extras
1. 2.3 engine (all I models have the 2.0). The horse power is not much different between the two engines, but the 2.3 gives you a pretty big bump upin torque - thus it is appealing to those enjoy feeling a nice punch when they accelerate. From what I have read on boards, the MPG is about 3-4 lower across the board with the 2.3 versus the 2.0.
2. If you get auto trans, as icspots noted, you get a 5 speed (all I models with an auto have a 4 speed auto). Both the 4 and 5 speed auto have sport shift.
3. Variable intermittent wipers (I models have fixed intermittent wipers)
4. Fog lights standard
You can get side airbags and curtains (you get both!)on all models. They are standard on the S-touring and S-grand touring.
The very top model (S grand touring) has automatic climate control, heated leather seats (a bad thing isthey are either on or off - unlike in some cars where there is a dial so you can adjust the temp), rain sensing wipers, an enhanced theft deterrent system, a navigation system, a premium audio system with 7 speakers, a compass autodim rear view mirror, as well as enhanced interior and exterior trim features.
The Base I can be VERY basic - some have no AC, manual windows, no keyfob (aka remote). It will come with a 4 speaker stereo system (whereas every other model comes with at least 6 speakers). As mentioned above, it comes with the smallest tires, and non alloy rims. When a dealer runs an ad in the paper, saying you can geta 3for what sounds like an insane bargain price - its very often a Base I.
