Is the MS3, 50 state legal...?
I'm trying to find out if the MazdaSpeed3 is 50 state legal. Can any of you that own one, please let me know. I'm currently living in Michigan, and could be moving to California in the near future. I need to make sure that if I purchase the car in Michigan and then move, it is 50 state legal.
Anyone have any information on this...?
Much appreciated!

Hey man i did some searching for yah and i was able to find out that yes a stock speed3 is in fact legal in california. You have to be careful about ur exhaust though alot of after market exhausts are illegal in california and i heard the po pos will pull u over for it haha (figures) but as long as ur stock u should have no problem.

Well CA is a PZEV state, so all of the cars sold there have to be PZEV compliant. I believe it includes a second catalytic converter, and ...... something else. Being that you're obviously moving from another state I don't know that they'd make you change it over..... I know some people that went to neighboring states in order to get around the PZEV stuff found that they were unable to register their car in their home state.
I'd look into it more, however since the MS3 is sold in CA (in PZEV form) it's obviously legal as long as it meets the requirements.

I've checked with a local dealer here in Michigan, they tell me we (state of MI) don't have any 50-state legal MS3's. And that I"d have to order one that could take up to 3 months (due to car coming from overseas).
Therefore, I called up Mazda customer service and talked to them about this. They are running a search for me if they can find any 50-state legal MS3's around my area. They will get back with me by tomorrow.
Also made a call out to a Dealership in CA, where they said they have (6) MS3's on their lot - and they have to order them for 50-state legal. Not sure what the 50-state includes but I would imagine a different calibration for the ECM, and possibly another catalyst.
This is rather frustating as we just turned in our Crossfire SRT6 (2-seater) and wanted to get the MS3 now. Guess this will have to wait.
To be continued....

California is just crazy about health/air problems since they f'd everything up. You could be driving up H1 and over the ocean you can SEE the huge layer of smog...
Plus you have to remember...EVERYTHING is illegal in CA pretty much

Got a phone call today from Mazda. They told me that I will have to go to CA to order a 50-state legal MS3. Or they recommended I call the California DMV to see what it takes to register a vehicle. From what the CDMV says, I need to have over 7500 miles on the car to register it. Looks like I'll have to wait until we move to CA to get a MS3. Doh! [sm=boohoo.gif]
