There is a difference between noise, and your dealership mechanics being hard-headed.

The noise on mine just started. Is it normal?? If normal why didn't it start when new?
I too have been around Electric Hydraulic pumps. Even the ones on airplanes don't have the whine as the one on my Mazda.
Guess I need to shut up but I don't like a smart *** that sits behind a computer screen and trolls.

happens I worked for TWA for 31 years, and don't think a mechanic would
sign off on any unusual noise made by a plane. I know, because I had to
deal with the really PO passengers when a flight canceled. Noise was not
there on my new 07 2.3, now it's there and the dealer says no problem, it's
normal, and to boot, you have a pump recall. Would you buy a used car
from these guys?

I was just reading your screen name (jhnjohnp) and it seemed to me to read as john-john. You don't have to go by that if you don't want to.
On the subject at hand, most of us know that Mazda dealers, car dealers in general, can be asshats, but not all of them are. This is across the board, but probably especially w/smaller car companies because they have less capitol to work with.

accepted the jhnjohnp deal. Name is John P Reilly, and John-John is fine.
Regarding car dealers, especially service departments, they are front line
employees and have to take the heat when a defect like this appears, but
than again, I don't want to be left holding the bag. Although this web
site, run by NHTSA, shows no Mazda 3 issues, it does show car owners
complaints of various car mfgs. models, recalls, etc. You may be aware of
it, but here it is anyway.
