American nameplate cars - selected models - have come up quite a bit in recent years, but their reputation is still in toilet in many people's minds because of where quality was 6+ years ago.

I think one of the reasons a used Malibu is cheaper to buy is the expectation (maybe valid, maybe not) that it won't last like a used Mazda, Honda or Toyota. I am not trying to be in your face, just throwing out reality, and I'll confess I know nothing about the Malibu.
I'll concede that - GM built crap a few years ago (I have a 2000 Malibu too).

That expectation is common about American cars, and it's true that that expectation is the fault of said American companies. A few of those companies have been getting back on track lately though - just look at the '08 Malibu, the '08 CTS, the '07 Aura...

And I love my Malibu. It's not the most fuel efficient or powerful V6 out there, and the gearbox isn't the smoothest...and it's not the quietest sedan out there, but it's a great value for money. Also, I love the customer service I've had in my life from GM: my '00 Malibu's intake manifold & catalytic converter went out of warranty, but after one call to a rep in the South, Chevrolet reimbursed us fully. In addition, the atmospheres in the Chevrolet dealerships I was in are much less frantic and pressured as the Mazda, Toyota, and Subaru dealers.

I bought the extended on mine, they wanted $1100 for it I talked them down to $700.
I buy it on Every vehicle I buy. For all you nay sayers I will give you my reasoning, I have not had an motor Vehicle wreck in 9 years, but I still have auto insurance.
My F150 had the rear end rebuilt at 52,000 miles, would have cost me $1800, they also replaced the lower ball joints at the same time. the $1034.91 for the Extended warranty was cheap and paid for on the contract compared to 1800 out of your pocket down the road.
Now, I would not put the Warranty on your loan, because it will cost you more, the F150 I had 60 months 0% interest, I paid for the Mazda one already.
i had no idea u could haggle the extended warranty.. i also have the EW but i feel like that was a mistake.. and i unknowingly just AGREED to it.. stupid STUPID me..

OOOOOOOOOOOO yes the mark up on EW is retarded something like 75-100% i read some where.
Dealers suck strait up....They are always trying to screw you.
You have to have your guard up in every way when you walk in there.

The Salesman makes his coin off the sale of the car and the finance guy and the floor manager make their extraoff of the EW and the Gap insurance

I would def. get it, especially on a used car.But I would not go with the warranties they try to sell. Buy one directly from Mazda. You can buy it until your current factory warranty it up. This is the best way to go and I bought a used Mazda 6 before I bought my brand new mazda 3 and I used it multiple times. I would buy it from Mazda.
