ORIGINAL: YBYTOYOTA

I always do my own oil changes in my Mazda3 (every 3K miles) which is very often because of my commute, but I'm getting tired of removing those 7 bolts and the 2 plastic pins holding the cowling in placeand then putting it back together over and over just to remove the oil filter element and change oil.
This might be a dumb question but....do I really need this cover/cowling under the car? I'm sure is OK to drive without it? I alsounderstand is to protect the engine from debrisbut after all, lots of cars don't have this covers under the engine and they seems to be running fine.
What year/model/engine of Mazda3 do you drive? Mine uses a normal oil filter, which is easy (relatively) tochange withthe cover in place- is it possible there is a normal oil filter that would do the jobfor your year/model/engine?

I believe some of theearlier modelyears have a weird oil filter set up,its worth pursuingif its critical to keep utilizing it.

My frustration is notchanging the filter cartridge/element in my Mazda3, that's why I don'tbuy the conversion kit, what I'm getting tired of and, the topic of my messageis, removing that darm cowling cover, I might as well live it off for good.
Now,since you mentioned about a cartridge filter to a spin-on conversion kit, my question is: is there any otherreason (beside $$$$$)that Mazda keeps using these old style cartridges based filters in their engines? why they don't built them and sell them withthe new spin-on filters in the first place?

But if you were dealing with an easier spin filter, then you wouldn't have to remove the bottom shield to dothe filter change- do you agree, or disagree?

I understand your point but I just don't want to deal with this conversion. Shield is already removed and I'm driving without it. Thanks everybody for the good feedback..[sm=smiley2.gif]

With it off Is there a possibility of debris getting into the cut-out just to the left of the oil plug? What is that hole for anyways?

It's used for final inspection @ the factory.

Does it pose a threat to damaging anything?
