transmission will not go into O/D
2011 Mazda 3,Sport 2.5 engine with 5 speed auto with 12,400 miles. Not sure if this car has a lock-up converter or not. Can someone clue me in? The car is running about 2200 rpm @ 60 mph, which is too high. It started a couple days ago while I was going 45mph it did a very hard down shift with a hugh "clank" sound. No light came on and trans shifts just fine. Really seems to me like the to converter is not locking up Went to service yesterday and was told since the are no lights, car checked out good. Could not duplicate problem. I will be taking this car back to service in a few days, but can't find any info on this trans. I will be grateful for any info from you guys.

You can test the lockup if you gently press the accelerator while going 60, if the RPMs slowly increase at the same rate as your speed then its most likely working. Now test again out of overdrive, this should disable the lockup, slowly accelerate and note the RPMs, they should travel higher as the engine revs up to produce more power just like at lower RPMs. Can you feel all the "shifts"? In your case you should feel or at least see 6 of them if the lockup is working IF the lockup only works in 5th, some work in more than one gear.

Torque converter not going into lockup
2011 mazda 3 sport with 5 speed auto trans....Mazda dealer cannot fix. They say it is working the way it is suppose to, but they also say a mazda tech Rep will be here in a couple weeks and they will let him take a look at it. I know it is not working correctly because up to a week ago I could change from auto to manual position with the gear shift while cruising over 45 mph and the engine RPM would rise 3 hundred RPM, then slide back into auto position rpm would drop the same amount. This tells me the converter was doing what it was suppose to do.That is lock up while in auto and going out of lock up in manual, as it was designed to do. Now at any speed doing the same thing, there is no change in the engine rpm at all. At 60mph rpm is 2250,and at 70mph it is 2600. That is too high and my fuel mileage has dropped 4 mpg. No lights has came on, but this could be a condition that does not throw a light. This car has 12,600 miles on it, and by the way, this all started a week ago while cruising @ 45mph in auto position, it suddenly downed shifted extremely hard with a loud bang and it never went into to lock again.I am open to any suggestions as to what could be causing this. Thanks!
